Chapter Eleven

“When I imagined seeing you today,” Diana began, gently touching two fingertips to Jorden’s colorful jaw, “my dreams didn’t include bruising.” The slightly puffy, yellow-black-blue-purple patch his scruff didn’t quite cover completely shocked her as soon as he’d come into Albero’s. She’d basked all night in the perfection that had been their Monday together and getting ready for work this afternoon didn’t hold any of its sluggishness as she anticipated seeing Jorden again. What she hadn’t anticipated was that some douchebag would attack him in front of his own home.

“Freak thing.” Jorden offered her a smile that would have melted her had it not ended in a wince. “I’ll be fine.”

“I’m sure you will be,” she said, meeting his gaze, “but that’s not the point. And the police didn’t get the jerk?”

“How could they?” Jorden sifted out a breath that held about billion notes of frustration. “I gave them the World’s Worst Description of a Bad Guy. It was too dark to see any specifics. For all I know it was a giant caterpillar.”

She smiled at his joke, but could tell he was pissed off about the entire situation. She couldn’t blame him. “And you can’t think of anyone who would want to mess you up?” Jealous boyfriends, husbands, ex-husbands perhaps? Had Jorden’s dating escapades come back to literally punch him in the face?

“I know what you’re thinking,” he said, “but no, there isn’t anyone who would want to attack me. I don’t steal other men’s chicks.”

At least he had rules. She put her hands up. “Fair enough.”

He gave her a tight nod, everything about his body posture indicating he wanted this conversation over.

“Freak shit happens,” she finally said. “I mean, I got slammed off the road by some jackass for no reason and had my body discovered in the dirt. Anything’s possible.” She peeked at that bruising again. “Can I get you some ice or something?”

Jorden shook his head, squinting a little as if he had a raging headache. “I put ice on it last night and took some aspirin. I’m just mad about the whole thing.”

“Of course you are. What an invasion.”

“Especially after having such an awesome day with you.” He grinned at her now in a more Jordenesque fashion. “I was looking forward to replaying the day in my mind all night and instead I ended up checking that all my doors were locked and wishing I was a bigger badass.” He gestured to his jaw. “You know, in between icing this.”

“I’ll have to make it my mission today to fill your head with better memories.” Diana glanced around the kitchen and finding no one in the general area as most of the restaurant staff was off doing their prep work, she snaked her hands up Jorden’s arms and rested them at the back of his neck. Scratching at his hair a little, she pressed her front against his, loving how his eyes closed for a minute as if everything tense in his body had been soothed by her presence.
